Juneteenth Celebration – All Are Invited
June 19, 2023 – 11:00 am Perth Amboy, New Jersey
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will host and participate in a celebration of Juneteenth on Monday June 19, 2023, in the City of Perth Amboy.
At 11:00 am, activities will begin at the Perth Amboy Ferry Slip where there will be a commemoration of the landing of enslaved Africans.
Most important, the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice will launch its Reparations Council that will feature several elected officials and invited dignitaries to include Senator Cory Booker, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, NJ ASW. Shavonda Sumter, the Rev. Charles Boyer and Ryan Haygood.
Thereafter, all will process to the St. Peter’s Church for a memorial at the monument for enslaved Africans who were buried there.
At noon, a Music Program will be presented in the church. Following the program, there will be a procession to the Perth Amboy City Hall Circle.
At 1:00 pm, the program continues with a Juneteenth Flag Raising ceremony and the ringing of church bells throughout the City of Perth Amboy. Mayor Helmin Caba will provide remarks throughout the day. The local NAACP is also a co-sponsor of the city’s program.
Bishop Stokes, Jonathan Gloster, and other members of the Reparations Commission will be present to support St. Peter’s at these events scheduled throughout the day. Do join us for this important commemoration.
