The Priesthood in the Diocese of New Jersey: Diocesan Discernment

As Christians we are called to love God with our whole heart, soul, and mind and to love our neighbors as ourselves. The Spirit nudges us onward, with ‘sighs too deep for words’, toward a fuller, more fruitful expression of Christ’s life within us.

We on the Committee on Priesthood applaud you for your faithfulness to God’s call. Most aspirants who enter into this process of formal discernment have wrestled for years with a desire to offer themselves in new ways to the Lord’s service. We view your interest in exploring ordained ministry as a genuine response to the Spirit’s invitation.

Our prayer for you is that this process of discernment will lead you to a fuller life of ministry in the Church, whether ordained or not. Discernment is the difficult but necessary duty of every Christian seeking to be faithful to the living Lord. Sometimes our own agendas need to be set aside so that a more excellent way may be revealed. We welcome you to this process with the sure and certain hope that the good work that Jesus Christ has begun in you will continue to grow to the glory of God.

A Prayer of Self Dedication

(from the Book of Common Prayer, p. 832)

Almighty and eternal God,
so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds,
so fill our imaginations, so control our wills,
that we may be wholly yours,
utterly dedicated to you,
and then use us, we pray, as you will,
and always to your glory and the welfare of your people;
through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
