A Prayer for the New Jersey State Legislature on the occasion of the Honorable Christopher Christie’s sixth Budget Address
By The Rev. Daniel Gunn
Matthias (24 February) 2015
State Capitol, Trenton, NJ
Let us pray:
God, our Ruler and Sovereign, Source of Wisdom, whose statutes are good and gracious, and whose law is Truth; you are here among us, your eyes behold the thoughts and intents of our hearts, and still you love us.
Today we remember your servant Chris, and his sisters and brothers who take counsel for this state. Give them discerning hearts, and minds quick to recognize your providential hand that in their deliberations they may enact just and prudent laws for the well-being of all this state’s peoples and its land.
You have blessed and prospered this state, so on this day we especially pray that you guide Chris and his colleagues toward an economy of compassion so that as you enrich us, we will not be naïve to the needs of others. Let us not abandon our biblical responsibility for the poor; rather may we all catch the thrilling and alluring vision of what it means for your reign on earth as in heaven. Do not let our politics be ruled by fear and anger, nor divided by animosity and competition; rather in all things let us be governed by the Law of Love.
May we feel the urgency of justice in all our dealings helping us to more fully grow in respect for the dignity of every human being, finding ourselves in our neighbor’s eyes with hearts open to the manifold hues of your grace. Fill us with a hope that has the “capacity to suffer wisely and generously.” Gently humble us when we speak from pride, prejudice, or contempt. And finally, remind us, Eternal Judge, that in your perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, no strength known but the strength of Love.
We have asked much, and in your bounty you have given much. Help us to be grateful in our words, which are easy, but also in courageous deeds bold enough to follow where you lead.
These things I pray in the name of the One who continually creates us, forever redeems us, and sustains us today and for all our tomorrows. Amen.
