St. John’s, Salem has been a part of Salem since 1722. A loving Christian community with an open & welcoming spirit, St. John’s Church is located in the county seat of a rural community. Worship opportunities are varied, including an 8 am Rite I service and a 10:30 am Rite II service on Sundays; Sunday Adult Forum at 9:15; Weekly Bible Study and Potluck Dinner Thursdays at 6:30; a Rite I Noon Eucharist every Wednesday and other special services.
When we have visitors or new members, we work hard to treat them as valued members of our family, matching them with opportunities to become involved in the life of our church. We host many different groups in our facilities, including NA, AA, NGA, the Salem County Historical Society, Salem County Retired Educators, and more. We sponsor many outreach activities during the year, including the Backpack Project (providing filled backpacks for our middle school to distribute as needed); Trunk or Treat in October, providing a safe place for kids to visit and show off their costumes; the Hanging of the Hats in January (providing cold weather accessories to those in need); our weekly Food Pantry; and other activities as needed. We also have a Quilters group who meets each Tuesday from September-June and creates children’s’ quilts for the children at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden.
St. John’s is involved in many community events. Our graveyard is a stop on the Salem City Ghost Walk in October, where a parishioner tells stories of some of the people buried there (many Revolutionary War era graves, including Col. Robert Gibbons Johnson and Samuel Dick). We open our church and Parish Hall during the Yuletide Tour of Homes on the first Saturday in December. People can tour the church, hear the stories of some of our stained-glass windows and listen to seasonal music.
St. John’s strives to be a loving congregation, that encourages the formation of disciples that proclaim the Gospel of Christ and respond to the needs of the parishioners and the surrounding communities.
St. John’s Episcopal Church is a Christian parish within the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey.
