Telling Our Stories: Documenting the Sacred Oral Histories of Your Congregation

Remembering our histories is important, come & learn how to preserve them.

Leader: Canon Jonathan Elliott, Director of Communications, Diocese of New Jersey

The stories and experiences of our cherished older members are an essential and captivating part of the lives of our churches.  In this workshop, diocesan communications director Jonathan Elliott will guide you through the process of creating and recording oral histories with members of your congregation.  The technology for these interviews is easy to acquire and use—with a smartphone and about $20 in applications and microphones, you’re ready to get started!

This seminar is divided into three segments.  In segment one, Canon Elliott will provide guidelines and instructions for interview techniques and drawing stories out of subjects via good questions and conversation.  In segment two, he will demonstrate a recording session in process, and outline the technology required for these interviews and its uses.  In segment three, he will describe proper storage and archival processes for these interviews, and suggest different methods for their use in public media such as websites and presentations.

This workshop is free and open to the public; each participating congregation is strongly encouraged to send a pair of participants to act as interviewer and subject.

Registration     Register by Monday November 7 online or contact Mary Anne Clisham, 609 394-5281, ext. 10
