A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols: Seasonal Tradition to be Celebrated at St. Luke's
December 14, 2014 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pmfree will offering
Please join us at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at 4:00 p.m. for a wonderful seasonal tradition. Nine short traditional Bible readings are intermingled with the singing of Christmas carols for choir and congregation under the direction of Dr. Brian Harlow.
Our service follows the format established by King’s College, Cambridge, England which was first introduced in 1918 by Eric Milner-White, the newly appointed Dean after experience as an Army chaplain which had convinced him the church needed more imaginative worship. The first service was broadcast by the BBC every Christmas Eve since 1928, even during WWII when the ancient glass and heat had been removed from the Chapel. The service has since been adapted and used by churches all over the world. From 1918, the service has always begun with the hymn ‘Once in Royal David’s City’. This year at St. Luke’s the choral selections will also include selections by John Rutter, William Mathias, Morten Lauridsen and choir member and Bernards High School student, Stephen Walley.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is located at 182 Main Street, Gladstone. There will be a free will offering.
