Our Bishop

Our Bishop

Sally French

The Rt. Rev. Sally French, D.D. has served as Bishop of the Diocese of New Jersey since June 24, 2023.

Prior to her election as our thirteenth bishop, diocesan, Bishop French was a member of the bishop’s staff in the Diocese of North Carolina. There, her ministry focused on congregational support and included work with congregations, clergy and lay leaders to strengthen communities and foster collaboration. Bishop French is committed to the vitality and support of all our congregations.

Bishop French was raised in Toronto, Canada, in a secular home. She was baptized, confirmed, and sponsored for ordination through campus ministries at the University of Toronto. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College, University of Toronto (Economics, History), a Master of Divinity degree through the Toronto School of Theology, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Virginia Theological Seminary. In 2024, she was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree (honoris causa) from Virginia Theological Seminary.

Bishop French was ordained a deacon in 2000 and a priest in 2001 in the Diocese of Edmonton, Anglican Church of Canada. In addition to her work in Canada, she has served congregations in North Carolina and New York.

Bishop French is married to the Rev. Clarke French and they are parents to teenagers Jack and Libby. They live in Pennington, NJ.
