Lessons & Carols at Historic St. Peter’s, Perth Amboy
December 16, 2018 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pmFree
St Peter’s Episcopal Church Choir will present its 43rd annual Service of Lessons & Carols at 10:30 am, Sunday, December 16, 2018, in our historic 1851 church, located at 188 Rector St., Perth Amboy, NJ.
The musical event is based on the traditional Anglican Lessons & Carols service, created in 1918, for the Choir of King’s College, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, in Cambridge, England; in which music reflects and illuminates the nine lessons, each of which is read by a different member of the community. The original service performed by the Choir of King’s College, was entitled Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols; but St. Peter’s has broadened the musical scope of the program to include both Advent, and Christmas-themed choral pieces.
The St. Peter’s Choir maintains an exceptionally high standard of music, and performance, and has become well known for its music programs. The weekly church choir swells to a chorus of 35 each for Lessons & Carols, as many musicians who have sung with Music Director Douglas Sheldon in the past, return for this unique event.
This year’s composers range from Herbert Howells, Geoffrey Ainger, William Llewellyn and John Rutter (English), to Richard Dirksen, Morten Lauridsen and Amy Beach (American) with Verdi (Italian), John Joubert (South African), and Eriks Esenvalds (Latvian), all providing musical selections, both familiar and novel.
