Ava DuVernay’s 13th: A Film Screening & Dialogue Series

June 29 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Trinity Church, Asbury Park, 503 Asbury Avenue
Asbury Park, NJ 07712-6104 United States

Join us for a free screening of 13th! The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Special Guest Jennifer Lewinski, More details on the documentary here. “Powerful, infuriating... Ava DuVernay’s documentary ‘13TH' will get your blood boiling… Electrifying.”--THE NEW YORK TIMES The below is excerpted from Common Sense Media's review. A new documentary, 13th, is a "fierce call to action...director Ava DuVernay effectively doubles down on both educating her viewers and inspiring them to take a stand against racial injustice in 2016 America. Hoping to provide a semblance of political balance to her efforts in 13th, DuVernay asserts that both Democratic and Republican administrations are responsible for burgeoning prison populations and the devastating effect of past policies on an entire minority population. Additionally, she interviews well-known conservatives, like Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist." "Particularly compelling are sequences in which she identifies some of the most noxious corporations and/or organizations...that profit from and depend upon the rounding up of as many able-bodied men as possible. And she unabashedly includes the chilling footage from a number of recent police shootings of unarmed African-American men and boys. Challenging, disturbing, and confrontational, this film is must-see viewing for mature and concerned Americans."  Learn more and register!

|Recurring Event (See all)
Weekly on the same day until June 29, 2017
Grace Episcopal Church, 43 Elizabeth Street
Pemberton, NJ 08068 United States

We will come together for a viewing and discussion led by Tomaso Collik-Migliaccio of the PBS Mini-Series "The Choir," based on Joanna Trollope's novel. The series from the mid-1990s concerns a fictional Anglican cathedral in England surrounded by various church-owned buildings in an area known as "the close" and its beloved choir of boys and men. It raises questions relevant for the life of our churches today. We will gather on four successive Thursday evenings from 7-8:30, beginning on 8 June.
